Toronto's 175th Anniversary

To coincide with Toronto's 175th anniversary, King George Square Properties will be erecting a statue of James Beaty in the courtyard between 152 and 166 King Street East.

This bronze replica of James Beaty will look out towards the building on the opposite side of King, which in the mid-1800's was the site of his newspaper "The Leader", and Canada's first steam printing press.

With this undertaking King George Square Properties is pleased to join with the City, private groups, and other individuals who have brought to life the early history of Toronto.

The period when James Beaty lived was one of great change. James Beaty and others of this dynamic period were responsible for the establishment of many of the great institutions that today we take for granted.

It is our hope to make James Beaty and his contemporaries known to both visitors and inhabitants of Toronto, who someday will be able to trace their footsteps along a historic walk stretching from the St. Lawrence Hall, along King Street East to Trinity Street and the Distillery District.

Introduction

King George Square Properties Inc. has owned and developed property in Toronto since the 1980's. From the beginning the company's focus has been the development and redevelopment of properties within the heart of old Toronto,
especially along King Street East between Jarvis and Parliament Streets. This area which contains the original layout of the town of York has buildings that
date from as early as the 1820's.

This year Toronto is celebrating the 175th anniversary of it's incorporation in 1834. One of the City's most influential citizens at that time was James Beaty, businessman, politician, and newspaper publisher. While renovating his former building, 167 King street East, a time capsule detailing the life of James Beaty was uncovered.
